Customer Story
In the autumn of 1964, the United States found itself in a post-World War II era of peace and prosperity, with the aerospace industry soaring to new heights. The Space Race was in full swing, and astronauts had already ventured into the cosmos, courtesy of both the United States and the Soviet Union.
Meanwhile, in sunny Burbank, California, Bill Fisch and Deken Jones embarked on a bold venture. They secured a 5,000 square-foot building with a clear mission: perfecting glass-to-metal sealed connector cartridges for the emerging spacecraft generation. What set them apart was their end-to-end control over manufacturing, from machining the body to broaching keyways, threading ends to crafting carbon molds. They even had their own CalAlloy furnace for hermetic sealing, carried out rigorous pressure tests, and paid meticulous attention to chemical cleaning - all in pursuit of self-sufficiency.
Come November of that pivotal year, Accratronics' strategy of horizontal integration paid off handsomely. An urgent request came in from a customer in need of a uniquely designed connector for NASA's Gemini Space Program, with a one-week deadline. Accratronics took on the challenge, delivered on time, and clinched the contract. Fast forward over half a century, and this family-run, multi-million dollar enterprise continues to be the go-to aerospace one-stop-shop, grounded in excellence and high performance.
Now, let's shift to 2008. The aerospace manufacturing industry was experiencing turbulence due to economic challenges, but innovation and global demand were still sky-high. In this uncertain landscape, Accratronics faced a growth imperative, seeking a machine that could streamline operations and cut handling costs without compromising quality. Vice President Troy Jones recounted their quest for an efficient solution, stating, "We looked at several machines and did some time studies. Most of them did fine in the studies but couldn't handle the broaching we needed."
This is where the plot thickens -Troy's brother Corby spotted a Eurotech Rapido in the Selway Machine Tool Booth at the Westec trade show and returned with a brochure in hand. Their investigation went into overdrive, involving visits to events like IMTS, dialogues with existing Eurotech users, and consultations with Eurotech heavyweights like National Service Manager Art Silva and President Jeff Walz. Troy confessed his initial skepticism, saying, "Initially, I thought it was way more machine than we needed for the connectors we were doing, but our investigations answered all our questions, and we decided to buy the Eurotech for the connector end of the business."
Prior to purchasing the Eurotech Rapido, Accratronics employed five different machines to produce the connector part at a cycle time that resembled a snail's pace -"Before we bought the Eurotech, our cycle time on the parts was 30 minutes plus handling." Jones recounted, "The Eurotech cut that time to 6 minutes and 50 seconds, including handling! So we were pleasantly surprised, of course." Now, that's what you call a game-changing upgrade!
Accratronics was skeptical about Eurotech's support since they had not heard much about the company. Troy reminisced about their initial interactions, saying, "Support has been great. Pat Cochren did our set-up and training. He is intense. I found his approach a bit intimidating but also invigorating."
Eurotech didn't just meet their cycle time promises and support expectations; they exceeded them. Accratronics now proudly boasts eleven Eurotech machines, eight of which are the speedy Rapido models. Troy couldn't help but sing their praises, "Eurotech machines run FAST. It's as if these machines were designed just for our parts. In addition, Eurotech CNCs are efficient and extremely accurate...We are extremely pleased with the machine. I'd love to buy three more right now."
Partnering with Eurotech has not only increased Accratronics production speed but their precision as well. Troy proudly stated, "The machine holds tolerances of plus or minus .0005 inches all day long without any adjustment. The thermal stability is fantastic; it takes just a few minutes." With over five decades of machining experience, Accratronics remains steadfastly committed to delivering top-notch aerospace components, and they entrust Eurotech CNC machines to help their customers soar to new heights. That's what you call an aerospace success story that's still very much in orbit!
