The Story of Bill Selway

 

In 1968, at the age of 22, Bill Selway took the helm of Selway Machine Tool Company after the untimely death of its founder, his father Roy. Throughout the early 1970s, Bill, along with his brother Pat, would drive door to door in Northern California towing a state-of-the-art ironworker and high speed to perform live demonstrations for potential customers. After many doors were shut on these youthful salesmen, Bill grew out his 'trademark mustache' that was with him until the end. Over the years, Jim, Chuck, Danny, Dell, and Joe (or Bill’s 5 younger brothers) joined as the business grew, setting the foundation for the family environment that still exists today at Selway Machine Tool Company.

Normally followed immediately after the Las Vegas Shot Show, this year’s Eurotech Annual Sales Meeting looked a bit different like everything else during these past months. With a last-minute change due to the Show's cancellation, Eurotech hosted their meeting closer to home in Brooksville, Florida.

The Secret to Automating CNC Machine Tools

At this year’s IMTS everybody was talking about the need for automation. Why then are only 26% of America’s top machine shops currently invested according to Modern Machine Shop’s 2017 Top Shop Report. Most machine tool manufacturers had automation systems on display for things like loading workpieces and pallets as well as additional cutting tools. If machine tool manufacturers are onboard, what is stopping the other 74% of Top Shops from investing in automating workholding and material handling? 

The Crux of the matter is…shop owners need to be sufficiently confident in their processes to consider allowing a robot to load components for unmanned machining.
